Getting started

How do I add something to listen to?

Open the web app, choose Add, then paste a link, pick a file or paste text. It appears in your library, ready to play.

Which files work?

PDF, EPUB, Markdown, HTML and plain text files, web articles by link, and pasted text. Scanned PDFs without a text layer can’t be read yet.

How do I start from a certain sentence?

Tap the sentence in the reader, then choose Play from here.

How do I install it?

Add the web app to your home screen or dock. The steps for each device are on the download page.

Voices and listening

How do I change the voice?

Tap the voice name in the player and pick another. Reading continues from the current sentence.

Why is there a limit on expressive voices?

Expressive voices and your own voice run on shared graphics hardware with a daily budget. Everyone gets a fair share of it. Standard voices have no limit.

How do I make my own voice?

Go to Voices, choose Record your voice and read the eight lines shown. A quiet room and a steady distance from the microphone give the best result.

Can I change the speed?

Yes, from 0.5× to 3× in the player. The sleep timer is next to it.

Account and privacy

Do I need an account?

Yes, so your library, voices and progress can follow you between devices. While we start out, accounts are by invitation.

What do you store about me?

Your email address, the documents you add, your listening progress and settings, and your voice recordings if you make a voice. The details are in our Privacy policy.

How do I delete my data?

Delete any document or voice in the app. To delete your whole account, write to help@streams.watch from the address you signed up with.

Fixing problems

Playback stops when my screen turns off.

Install the web app to your home screen and play from there. Some phones also stop background audio to save battery, so allow Streams Reader to run in the background.

I pressed play and nothing happens.

The first minute of a new document can take a few seconds to prepare. If it stays silent, check your connection and try again. Expressive voices may wait for the next daily share.

The text has extra bits, like menus or ads.

Some pages mix the article with other content. Paste the text directly instead, and tell us the link so we can improve the import.
